Watch: Defending 6A football champs Edina have a lot of players stepping into bigger roles

KSTP Sports attended a recent Edina Hornets football practice to take the temperature of the defending 6A champions. We learned that the 2026 Hornets only return two starters on offense and two on defense. In other words, this year’s team will feature many players stepping into new roles.

It does help that one of the carryover defensive starters is senior defensive lineman Gage Geyer. He’s among Class of 2027 commitments for coach P.J. Fleck and the Gophers. Amazingly, Geyer told us that he only started playing football as a sophomore.

We spoke with Geyer and 7th-year head coach Jason Potts.

Edina outlasted Moorhead in an offensive slugfest with a 42-35 victory for the Class 6A crown last November. Edina had also played in the Prep Bowl in 2023, falling to Centennial.
