‘Times and needs have evolved’: Ramsey County deputies replace St. Paul police for mayor’s security

Ramsey County deputies will replace St. Paul police in providing security for Mayor Kaohly Her, marking a departure from who typically delivers that service.

A Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said the mayor’s office contacted the sheriff’s office about providing security services earlier this month.

The sheriff’s office agreed, and deputies began providing the service on Sept. 17. County officials say the sheriff’s office was already positioned to take on the role because of its countywide jurisdiction and duties that include security at the Ramsey County Courthouse.

The city has agreed to cover the costs of the security detail, according to the sheriff’s office.
