A new law eliminated the state's longtime "shotgun zone" to give counties the authority to choose which firearms hunters can use.

ST PAUL, Minn. — There are some early hunts next month that kick off the 2026 deer hunting season, but there is a major change hunters should be aware of.

For the first time in decades, hunters in most Minnesota counties will be able to use rifles instead of a shotgun.

A 2025 law eliminated the state's longtime "shotgun zone" law and instead gives nearly 60 county officials the authority to now choose which firearms hunters may use.
