Neighbors hope Stevens Square is being made safer a month after a deadly shooting

Lotto stickers now cover the bullet holes at the Net Supermarket on Stevens Square.

“They call me, like when Franklin calls me and he said like, we get shot,” recalls owner Hussin Alkhalaf. “I come here and I find the police and I find everything.”

Alkhalaf, who’s owned the store for nine years, says he arrived that Sunday night, one month ago, to find one of his employees shot in the leg just outside.  

Three others were wounded, and one person was killed, in what Alkhalaf believes was a drive-by shooting.

Alkhalaf says he is concerned for his own safety, and that of his employees when at the store.

“Absolutely, yes,” Alkhalaf declares. “We put some wood you know, and the glass on the inside to protect us from the shooting because a lot of shootings before and the people would come inside.”
