Man allegedly tried to kidnap his ex while she was leaving hospital in Golden Valley

A man is in custody after he allegedly tried to kidnap his ex from a Golden Valley hospital’s parking lot on Monday.

Todd Alan Smith, 63, is facing one count of kidnapping after he allegedly pepper sprayed his ex’s daughter and tried to drag his ex into a vehicle.

According to court records, police were called to the Minneapolis Clinic of Neurology in Golden Valley, where an attack had been reported. Police found three women in the parking lot of the hospital who multiple witnesses said had been attacked by two men.

One woman told investigators she had been leaving the hospital with her aunt and mother, the latter of whom suffers from dementia. As they were helping get the woman’s mother into the car, they said a dark colored truck pulled up, after which Smith and another man exited the vehicle.
