Despite tougher Minnesota law, charges remain rare for driving out-of-service school buses

Minnesota lawmakers strengthened penalties three years ago for operating school buses deemed unsafe to drive, making the offense a gross misdemeanor.

But despite state troopers stopping 22 school buses operating under out-of-service orders since the law took effect, court records show only one criminal charge has been filed.

The findings come a day after 5 INVESTIGATES reported that Pride Transportation had repeatedly operated buses after state inspectors determined they were too dangerous to drive. 

State records obtained through public records requests showed troopers cited the company multiple times over several years for operating buses marked out of service.
