WASHINGTON — A Virginia mother convicted of a misdemeanor after allowing her 5-year-old son to walk alone to a neighborhood pond says she plans to appeal the case.

Karyann Parkinson was convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a Class 1 misdemeanor, in connection with the June incident, according to Virginia court records. She was given a six-month suspended jail sentence.
