A 106-year-old World War II veteran and influential leader in North Alabama's economic development has passed away, leaving a legacy of service.

CULLMAN, Ala. — Roy Drinkard, a World War II veteran, businessman and longtime community leader in Cullman, Alabama, who at the time of his death held the distinction of being the oldest living United States Marine, has died. He was 106.

Drinkard served as a Marine during World War II, including combat service in the Pacific theater. He went on to become a driving force in North Alabama's economic development, leading the Cullman Industrial Development Board for nearly three decades and playing a key role in the "Flying 50" initiative that helped bring new jobs and industry to the region.
