WASHINGTON — By most metrics, rabies exposures have increased this summer compared to 2025, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released Thursday, Sept. 10

The agency reported 17% more rabies-related inquiries in July and August. Typically, around 100,000 people are treated for potential exposure to rabies per year. 

"Several high-profile rabies outbreaks and mass rabies exposure events have highlighted the importance of performing careful rabies risk assessments and following evidence-based recommendations for administering," the CDC wrote.
