Officials lift elevated burning restrictions in northern MN

More than 60,000 acres in total have burned in northern Minnesota since lightning ignited several wildfires in July.

ELY, Minn. — Officials lifted the last remaining elevated burning restrictions Monday after rain helped improve the conditions in northern Minnesota.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources lifted the Class III burning restrictions for Cook, Lake and the rest of St. Louis County at 12:01 p.m. Monday.

“While conditions have improved, we’re not done with fire danger this year, as fall is just around the corner,” said Karen Harrison, DNR wildfire prevention specialist, in a statement. “It’s important for people to continue following wildfire prevention tips such as proper campfire safety and using caution when doing outdoor activities that create heat or sparks.”
