Man accused of killing Minneapolis cashier goes before a judge Thursday

A judge is set to hear arguments in the case against a man accused of killing a Minneapolis cashier after he waived his right to a jury trial.

47-year-old Taylor Schulz faces first-degree and second-degree murder charges in the Dec. 8, 2023 killing of 66-year-old Robert Skafte. Prosecutors said Schulz beat and impaled the Oak Grove Grocery employee with a golf club.

Schulz has pleaded not guilty and is pursuing a mental illness defense. Court records show he was found incompetent to stand trial three times before being restored to competency in November 2025.
